The State of Nevada supplied a silver spike to be driven through the last rail and into the rail tie of the Transcontinental Railroad in 1869. Silver mines existed throughout Nevada but by the late 1940’s, most mines had run “dry” and the towns that had sprung up around the mines became “ghost towns”.
